A short history of the San Antonio River Walk

The San Antonio River Walk is located in the heart of downtown, just south of where the North and South Flores Street bridges cross over it. The area was envisioned by architect Robert Hugman to emulate European riverside walks with an urban setting. He also designed many buildings lining its banks which are still used today for commercial purposes or as city landmarks. The River Walk is a major tourist attraction in San Antonio, with many restaurants and shops along its banks.

The San Antonio River Walk has been an integral part of the city since Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda sailed it in 1691. Hugman's vision was to create a public space where visitors could relax under the shade of the giant cypress trees growing along its banks. Many of these trees were transplanted from cemeteries and still stand today.
